On a 10-mile square area of marshy land, grew one of the most imposing and influential world capitals of today. Washington DC (District of Columbia), the capital of the United States and the seat of national government, lies between Maryland and Virginia, on the east bank of the Potomac River. It was envisioned by Pierre Charles L' Enfant, the French architect who laid out the original plans, as a city of marble buildings, fountains, spacious parks and broad avenues.
