This country is basically a "cash country" which implies that credit cards and travellers cheques in the cities are hard to use. Fortunately, American Express, Diners Club, Visa and Mastercard are accepted in places where tourists frequently visit. ATMs are also starting to flourish in the cities. Money exchange (preferably US$ or Euros) are done in the cities and larger towns at banks, hotels or bureaux (kantors) which give the best rates. Language: Polish is the national language, however, English is widely understood most especially in tourist spots. Health: Only a few health risks are associated with travel to this country. Tourists who plan to visit forested areas are advised to consult medical advice regarding inoculations for tick borne encephalitis. It is also advised to consume bottled water to avoid gastrointestinal problems. Tipping: This practice is not customary in Poland, however, one can opt to give tips for excellent services. In restaurants, a 10-15% tip is customary. Communication: The international access code for Poland is +48. The outgoing code is 00, followed by the country code. Rates are cheapest from 4pm to 6 am, and on weekends. Mobile phones can be handy, local operators use GSM networks which may not be compatible with some US cellular phones. Entry requirements for Americans: US passport holders do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for period of intended stay. |
