Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills) and the Museo de la Torre Manaca Iznaga

This historic site was once the center of sugar plantations and industry in the 18 th and 19 th century, the period of economic prosperity in the city. The 12 remains of sugar mills and estates are mute reminders to the memoirs of slavery amidst the breathtaking splendor of the valley. The 144-ft. high tower Manaca Iznaga, once used as a lookout over slaves working in sugar fields, is the centerpiece attraction. It has been declared by UNESCO as a Cultural Patrimony of Mankind.

La Canchánchara

This tavern is one of the country's most antiquated structures, dating back to the late 18 th century when the city's economy was flourishing. Located at Calle Real entre Boca y San Jose, it is named after a native drink consisting of lemon juice, honey and aged Havana Club brand rum. The drink is a favorite among locals and visitors for so many decades, and is best served cold in glazed pottery.

Museo Nacional de la Lucha contra Bandidos

Built in 1770, and completed in 1913, this museum features old photos, documents, and weapons from combats between the National Revolutionary Militia and the counter-revolutionary bands who made the Escambray mountain ranges as their main stronghold. The museum is the former church of San Francisco de Asís. It was destroyed in early 20 th century, but was later rebuilt to its present condition. In 1986 the former convent became a museum named, the "Museum of the Struggle against Bandits".

Plaza Mayor

From its' establishment in 1514, the city's central plaza has undergone reconstruction until it was finally finished 300 years later to its present state. It became the site of sprawling mansions and palaces of rich families during the 19 th century. These historical structures now house quaint museums, and the plaza is accented with four beautiful gardens.
