Tokyo, Sensoji Temple

Senso-ji, Tokyo 's oldest temple, is located in the Asakusa district. Established in 628 AD, an interesting legend surrounds it.

According to the tale, two brothers were fishing in a river nearby when their nets caught a golden image of Kan'non, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. The brothers were inspired to keep it in the temple as sign of their faith.

Today, pilgrims still make their way to the temple to seek the favour of the goddess. The statuette is still inside the temple but it is never shown to the public.

Many festivals are held to celebrate the shrine. One popular event is the summer fireworks display at the Sumida River .

Visitors to the temple are always delighted by the vibrant avenue that leads up to it, Nakamise Dori, which has many shops and souvenir stalls. The Demboin Garden near the temple is also worth a visit, and the quiet greens serve as a welcome change from the crowds and buildings in the city.
