Tours Around Tokyo

Tokyo, Kamakura

Kamakura city is located by the Miura Peninsula , about 50km southwest of Tokyo . It was the centre of political power in medieval Japan and also the headquarters of the government during the 13th century. Rich in history, a number of important monuments, shrines and temples are found here. There are nice beaches, and also some hiking trails in the woods nearby.

One of the highlights of Kamakura is the Great Buddha, a 13.35 metre high bronze statue depicting the seated Amida Buddha. Found in premises of the Kotokuin Temple , it is the second largest statue of Buddha in the country (the largest is at the Todaiji Temple in Nara ). Kamakura 's Great Buddha was built in 1252 and placed in the temple hall. A tsunami destroyed the temple in the late 15th century, but the Buddha survived. Since then it has been displayed in the open.
