Main AttractionsTokyo, The Imperial Palace
The Imperial Palace is not accessible to visitors but the surrounding area of Higashi Gyoen (East Garden) is a welcome respite from the grey concrete of the city. The garden is open to the public, and on January 2 and December 23, the inner grounds are also accessible when the Imperial family greets the crowd from the balcony. Guided tours of the palace are conducted in Japanese, but an English audio guide and pamphlet are available. Tours need to be booked in advance with the Imperial Household Agency. A wonderful time to visit is during the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom in the garden and along the castle moat. Transport: Subway to Tokyo station |

Considered the heart and soul of the city, Japan 's imperial palace is built on an enormous site that used to be the location of Edo Castle during the Tokugawa era. Completed in 1888, it remains the official residence of the emperor of Japan.
