San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge

The most photographed bridge in the world remains to be the most famous symbol of the city despite rivalry from contemporary structures. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world and the 746ft (224m) suspension towers were higher than any structure west of New York City during its completion in 1937.

Walking across the bridge, under the towers that emerge 65 storeys above the water is one of the great ways to explore the hugeness of the construction and affords scenic views of the city's skylines, the bays and its islands.
