Tourist Information about Memphis
Memphis , home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock n' Roll, and a city that has been at the center of American history in more ways than one. Memphis started out as campgrounds for the Chickasaw nation until it was made into a fort for the United States in 1797. After a treaty with the American Government, the Chickasaws turned over all of Western Tennessee which then opened up Memphis and Mississippi . In 1819, three land speculators, one of them, the then future President Andrew Jackson, founded the city and named it Memphis because of its similarity in proximity to the Mississippi River in relation to the ancient capital of Egypt, Memphis, and the Nile River. At the end of the civil war, Memphis became home to many African Americans, especially in the district of Beale Street , which later became the birthplace of a new type of music that would later be known as the Blues. |
