Lima is considered to be an ancient city of kings and royalty, a vibrant and majestic place that dates back to before the time of the Incas. Its thriving culture and friendly people make it a must-place to visit in the world. It was one of the richest and most powerful cities in its heyday, as evidenced by much of its structure and architecture, such as mansions, churches, and universities, some of which can be seen today. It was discovered in 1535 by Spaniard Francisco Pizarro and quickly rose to prominence. For around two hundred years, Lima also served as the headquarters for the Spanish Inquisition. Today, Lima expresses the best of its colonial history melded with its modern, upbeat outlook. Walking around some of the city's districts, travelers get a distinct impression of courtly, old world scenery and atmosphere with a healthy dose of cafes, cinemas, clubs, and discos. |
