Istanbul, important visitor informationIstanbul is one of the safest places to travel. However, it is important to stay attentive as one wouldn't know where dangers would suddenly materialize. The only chink in Istanbul's armor is the bad reputation of its carpet sellers. Sultanahamet, which is a place where merchants usually sell their wares, is notorious for their hostile carpet sellers. It is best to deal with them diplomatically but firmly. In touring the city, mosques can be visited for free. Donations are voluntary and not required. In some places such as the Rustem Pasa, Sokullu Pasa, Little Ste Sophie, and the Sehzade Mehmet Camii , doormen who charge visitors an entrance fee are to be ignored. Most Istanbul natives are not very familiar with the English language. It is a good idea to learn some Turkish words and phrases to get around. Moreover, the locals would appreciate the effort in learning their language. |
