Tourist Information about Istanbul
Istanbul is said to be the largest city in the world. It is geographically located in both Europe and Asia, but is considered part of European territory. Istanbul, which is counted one of the world's oldest cities, has been the seat of several empires through history. It is also well-known for its religious history as Istanbul is the seat of the Greek Orthodox Church. Istanbul was a witness to three empires - the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Before it was named Istanbul, its olden name was Constantinople in honor of the emperor Constantine who claimed the city. The city was founded by Greek colonists originally as Byzantium, but Constantine made it the eastern capital of the Roman Empire and was named after him. After the fall of Rome, the Byzantine Empire came into view with Constantinople in the heart of its reconstruction. The Greek Orthodox Church grew into existence in this period, as Greek culture was very much evident in the city. After Constantinople fell into the hands of the invading Turks, the Ottoman Empire later on claimed the city and made it its capital. Constantinople officially became Istanbul only in the 1930s. Istanbul is a city with a mix of olden and modern structures. This is where history meets the future as the Levent district showcases the latest in modern architecture while the city keeps its rustic touch with its old churches and temples. A scenic view awaits travelers as Istanbul beckons with its distinct style. |
