Tourist Information about Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. This beautiful city is located at the heart of a network of streams, in the delta of the Red River. With several lakes surrounding the city, Hanoi, Vietnam's second largest city, has always been the political, cultural, economic as well as the technological center of the whole country.

Hanoi was Vietnam's capital from the beginning of the 11 th century until the end of the 18 th century. In 1802, under the Nguyen dynasty, Hanoi was replaced by Hue. When the Vietnamese lost their independence to France in 1884, Hanoi became the capital of French Indochina. Vietnam was declared independent on September 2, 1945 but the French held the city throughout the Indochinese War from 1946 to 1954. After the war, Hanoi became the capital of North Vietnam.

To this day, Hanoi still retains its French colonial ambiance. A lot of its structures and designs still preserve the elegance of French architecture that influenced the city decades of years ago.

Dotted with lakes and lovely parks, Hanoi has a lot to offer its visitors. Unlike most of the Asian countries, Hanoi is green, with trees lining most of its streets. It is fast becoming one of the most attractive and fascinating cities in Asia, with its very interesting cultural life, flourishing tourism industry and an economy that is improving rapidly.
