Tourist Information about Copenhagen
Copenhagen, Denmark's capital and Scandinavia's largest city, has more than one story to tell. The birthplace of writer Hans Christian Andersen, the seat of Danish monarchy, and the home of world-famous beer, Copenhagen is part of the most dynamic part of Northern Europe. Copenhagen, or Købmandshavn, means "merchant's harbour" in Danish. The city used to be a fishing village until the middle of the 12 th century, when the Bishop Absalon fortified it in 1167. Being a strategic location for a harbour, the city became the center of commerce to derive its present name. The city is lined by the Øresund, a strait connecting the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. There are four palaces which flank the city along with landmarks of its wonderful fairytale-like history and colorful culture. |
