Tourist Information about Charleston
Located on the peninsula at the union of the Copper and Ashley Rivers on the Atlantic coast of South Carolina, Charleston is regarded as one of the most charming cities in United States. Battered by natural calamities such as fires, earthquake, hurricane, it is still reputed as the most pleasing and distinguished places in the whole country. Southern architecture, as presented by tall, narrow houses with shaped iron balconies and wooden shutters, appealing gardens and shaded porches enclosed by ornate iron gates, is visible in the city. Its museums are double-storey residences, which belonged once to affluent colonial merchants. The city was first considered as an important seaport accommodating the rice and cotton plantations of the area. Being a key slave-trading center in the region is another interesting historical note on this city. The people of West African descent or the Gullah culture of the islands has an evident presence here. You can see them especially at the Old City Market where the sounds of traditional rituals can be heard and the sight of women weaving grass-wares is visible. |
