Getting There

Over twenty airlines, both national and international, have flights to and from Cape Town International Airport (tel. 021/934-0407). From the airport it should be about a thirty minute drive at most to reach the city centre if it's not rush hour. (Peak hours are between 4pm and 6pm, when you can expect traffic to double your travel time).

Getting Around

Although the city and the suburbs comprise a vast sprawl, the ocean and the landmarks of Lions Head and Table Mountain are within easy reach. Most hotels are located along the Atlantic Seaboard, with eight kilometres of coastline from the main business district to Camps Bay , with the Waterfront, Seapoint and Greenpoint along the way. Generally speaking, Cape Town 's public transport has a poor reputation for safety; it's recommended that visitors rent a car, especially for trips to the surrounding areas. The driver is required to be over 23 years of age with a full driving license and a credit card. Any valid license in English with a photo will suffice, or an International Driving Permit.

For short trips, minibus taxis are inexpensive and easily found along well-travelled routes. However, don't expect the minibus to be in good condition, or the driver to be particularly safety-minded. Trips within the city usually cost about R3. Golden Arrow buses at the main bus terminal service routes around the city, albeit with a casual regard for trip schedules. Still, they are a good choice if you need to keep costs low. Don't use the railway service, except for the Simon's Town line that runs the route around Table Mountain , through the Southern Suburbs, past Muizenberg, with the stunning False Bay coast along the way.

Taxis tend to be expensive, although they may be your only choice at night if you don't have your own car. It is not advisable to use public transportation at night, and only explore the outlying township areas if you are on an organised tour.
