Canberra, getting there and around
There is no international airport in Canberra , but available flights from all Australian capital cities have made the metropolis more accessible to visitors. If you are traveling from one of the smaller State capitals, you might have to make a stopover in Sydney or Melbourne en route. From the airport, which is 7km southeast of the city centre, you can hop on a shuttle minibus to the Jolimont Centre or to various hotels. Since there isn't much traffic in Canberra , one can also opt to take a cab and not worry about expensive fare. Buses also run to Canberra from Sidney , Adelaide , and Melbourne . Trains, on the other hand, run from Sydney to Canberra , passing by various capitals. A combined bus-train trip from Melbourne can also be an option. If you decide to have a road trip, you can rive to Goulburn or to Yass (depending whether you're heading north or south) by passing through the Hume Highway, which runs between Melbourne and Sydney, and is about 50km north of Canberra. For a relatively cheap way of getting around town, the ACTON bus is the most popular means of public transportation. It runs regular routes throughout Canberra . Popular tourist buses covering most sights include bus nos. 33, 34, 40, and 80. If you want to veer off the usual route, you may take the new ACTON Flexibus evening service, which starts after six o' clock in the evening. Another means and perhaps an enjoyable way of touring the town for the physically fit, is by bicycle. Canberra has an excellent network of bike paths, which would perhaps make the tourist appreciate the surroundings more. |
