Pubs, pubs, and more pubs! Well, Belfast is not just about that, although it’s one of the things I love about it. There are also neat places to go to. The Empire Music Hall on Botanic Avenue leaves quite an impression. It used to be church, late-Victorian, I think, but has been turned into a three-floor entertainment center. It is a live-music venue that features blues and jazz in their Basement Bar. My friend and I visited it every night for a week to fully enjoy its surprises. Tuesday was stand-up comedy night in the main hall. We had a barrel of laughs then. Thursday is blues, while tribute bands are featured on Friday and Saturday. Lavery's Gin Palace has an interesting clientele because along with the Empire Music Hall, it also has an array of entertainment choices. It has a back bar downstairs for drinking where you can also do sing-along. For those who are more sports-oriented, it has a public bar for drinking and watching football. Live bands and/or DJs mixing discs are found in the middle floor. Finally, the top floor is devoted to pool, pinball and other game entertainment. And if you care for a little history, there is Kelly's Cellars, which was established in 1720 and White’s Tavern, which was established almost a hundred years earlier (in 1630). Both feature live music mostly traditional and folk. |
