Tourist Information about Beijing
Ji, Zhoujun, Youzhou, Nanjing, Zhongdu, Yanjing, Dadu, Beijing, Beiping and back to Beijing... perhaps no other place can claim as many names as Beijing. Such numerous former names attest to Beijing's long and rich history. Before 1949, the Western world knew Beijing as Peking. Beijing, the capital of China is situated about 35 miles southeast of the Great Wall of China on the southern China plain between the Pai and Yungting rivers. It has been expanded several times and covers an area of about 6,500 square miles. Beijing, literally meaning "northern capital", is administered directly by the central government. One of the major industries is publishing and printing due to the city's educational and cultural importance. Major industries include the manufacturing of textile, canned goods, agriculture and industrial machinery among others. With no more official off-limit areas brought about by the Cultural Revolution during the 1950's, Beijing has opened itself to modernity and has pursued a change in its image. At present it is in the midst of preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. |
