The city was originally of Creek and Cherokee Native American settlement before the tribes were relocated to Oklahoma . Soon after, the city hosted a terminal on the Western & Atlantic Railroad, which was rumored to be the source of the name " Atlanta ". The name of the city was finally incorporated in 1847. Enduring and rising above a lot of battles during the succeeding civil war era, the city earned the moniker "The Phoenix City", which is why most of Atlanta 's symbols carry the code of the Phoenix . |
