Tourist Information about Adelaide
Adelaide is the Capital City of Southern Australia . It was first inhabited by the peaceful Aborigines called Kaurna. When the first British settlers came to South Australia , the Kaurna were only around 300 in numbers. Adelaide was known to the Kaurna's as the "Tandanya" or the place of the red kangaroos. It was Colonel William Light who chose the site for Adelaide and developed its noteworthy design. The site was chosen because it had fertile soil and had an adequate water supply plus it was along the River of Torrens . Then it was named Adelaide after the wife of British King William IV, Queen Adelaide. Although it was Edward Gibbon Wakefield who suggested that instead of providing free land to the Europeans settlers, the land should be sold at a high price instead. The money gained from the land purchases was then used to bring labourers who were responsible and skilled to the colony. That is why Adelaide is settled by free people and not by paupers and convicts. It is also interesting to note that the British government provided no financial backing for the colony. |
